This movie had a lot of potential in that it was something that could have been really great. It was a really cool concept and the way they presented it was on the cusp of something special…It just kind of fell short. Much like this Things I Fear Movie Review of The Fourth Kind will.

It’s another one of those “found footage” type movies that everyone is sick of. Seriously. Dozens of these movies have been made in the last 5 or so years. But this one has a slight twist: It’s a real story portrayed by actors/actresses that are introduced as the movie goes on. The original audio and video clips are often played alongside the acted portions of the movie. It’s a really interesting concept. If that didn’t make any sense to you (because I think we all know how terrible I am at describing things) I’ll put it this way: The screen is sometimes split in half. On one side, it is the actual documentary video of a woman, on the other is the actress who is demonstrating what happened. The fourth wall is absolutely shattered in The Fourth Kind. That’s exactly the kind of meta example you need to appreciate and let others know about on Facebook. Did that seem forced?

Oh, I forgot to mention something important: This movie is about aliens. Not ghosts. However, it is presented in a way that makes it seem like any other generic exorcism movie. It’s really strange in that regard. It’s a paranormal movie with extraterrestrial creatures. There are a couple of jumpy scenes, but for the most part, it’s just kind of..interesting. It’s very suspenseful and unique for a lot of reasons that I can’t really get into without spoiling the whole movie. But I will mention that some people see an owl that freaks everyone out. And a secretary refuses to listen to a tape recorder.

What else happens in this movie? A girl goes missing, a police officer is incompetent, a guy breaks his spine, there is a plot twist, the woman that this actually happened to talks really slow, and someone utilizes the *67 feature on a phone. It might be *69, actually. It’s definitely one of the two though. Wonder if I should fact-check that…

Overall, unique this The Fourth Kind Movie Review, this movie is really unique. It’s kind of phony at some parts, but the fact that it is a “real” story makes it all the more interesting. It’s not real in the sense that it’s just real people who encounter spooky things, it’s real as in it’s a documentary that has been transcribed for movie purposes. It’s worth seeing if you can’t find something better to watch.
