There are at least 3 Chapters in the Insidious movie franchise. If you haven’t seen any of them, Chapter 3 is sort of a weird place to just dive in. Sort of like watching Saw V first. But don’t watch Saw V at all. Insidious, on the other hand, is quite good. Though Chapter 3 is a little different. And not as good as the first 2. But that’s why we write and read things like this impending Insidious: Chapter 3 Movie Review. So we learn why it is or is not worth watching!
A young girl who recently lost her mother ventures over to a stranger’s house to have a woman attempt to talk to said deceased mother from beyond the grave. Who is the mysterious woman? Why it’s the woman from the first two movies! She has the ability to talk to dead people. Pretty nifty party trick. So the girl is pretty excited about the idea of communicating with ghosts despite an ambiguous warning from the woman. The woman attempts to contact the girl’s dead mother but is instead greeted by a scary demon who doesn’t seem like the friendly type.
The girl has a blog. I have a blog! So, by association, I’m as famous as this movie is. Her name is Quinn. Though I’m not sure I’m going to remember that beyond this sentence. If I call her ‘the girl’ or ‘Quinn’, just know I mean the same person. Anyway, so Quinn goes out to quickly fail an acting audition before proceeding to stand in the street until a car hits her. After a trip to the hospital, she returns home for an awkward reunion.
Quinn (still remembered!) breaks both of her legs and is therefore relegated to bed. This is where the plot of the movie really starts. The first 20 or so minutes can pretty much be scrapped. All you need to know is a girl wants to talk to her dead mother and has broken legs. However, it’s around now we are given a quick reminder of some of the worst things that could happen while you’re home alone. There is also a weird sludge-man that makes a few appearances. This later turns out to be the villain for reasons. What are those reasons? I can’t just give everything away! Anyway, so while Quinn is bed-ridden some paranormal things are happening. I think Insidious: Chapter 3 assumes you’ve seen the first two Chapters so there’s no reason to explain the concept of ghosts vs demons.
Some spooky things happen. The dad, who sort of looks like the main actor guy from Iron Man mixed with the main actor guy from 1408, has the ability to move at the speed of light. This is evident by him waking up to faint banging on the ceiling, locating a bat, and making it up a flight of stairs within about 2 seconds. Maybe he is Iron Man. Is Iron Man the one who can move really fast? I don’t watch those movies. I watch movies like this one. And somehow like The Fields. I am never going to stop referencing how bad that movie was. Now I’m just angry and forgetting what I was talking about. Some Review this is turning out to be…
Anyway, so more spooky things occur. The woman from the beginning of the movie awakens from a dream, sees a demon, and decides her services must be needed. Meanwhile, Quinn’s irrelevant brother delivers an Oscar-worthy scene after 50 minutes of ambivalence. They hire a team of paranormal investigators because the brother watched a YouTube video. These investigators later become partners with the woman. Apparently, this movie is a prequel. Why did it take me to the end of the movie to notice that?
Along with the help of two qualified ghost hunters, Elise (first time mentioning her name, sorry, was so focused on Quinn’s name) ventures into The Further. It is within The Further she finds who/what she’s looking for after some drama. Some words are shared, some minor fighting with a demonic entity occurs, and all is wrapped up. The last 20 minutes or so just seem like the writers punted on making a good movie after realizing the first hour wasn’t going anywhere. The first two Insidiouses. Insidii? The first two movies are better than this one but slightly more on that below.
Insidious: Chapter 3 Final Thoughts
The first two movies are better than this one. Yet I only chose to write this Insidious: Chapter 3 Movie Review. Makes sense, makes sense. Just watch the first two, okay? I think one of the main scares with this franchise is the sound. The score, if you will. Many horror movies that rely on jump-scares or slow-moving creatures utilize sounds and music to their advantage. Try watching this movie without any volume. It won’t be nearly as scary. Or, better yet, try watching it with the TV and sound off instead.
Agree or disagree? The choice is yours. Let me know in the comments or across relevant social media networking websites like Facebook and/or others. See you there!
