This Is The End is not exactly a Horror Movie in the conventional sense. It is definitely more of a comedy with a scary concept as the undertone. With that being said, there are definitely enough frightening situations and scenes to justify a This Is The End Movie Review. No, it doesn’t have any spooky alien encounters. No, it doesn’t have any weird phantom things appearing after reading a children’s book. What it does have is a plethora of monsters, demons, and that general apocalyptic vibe so many of us enjoy. Speaking of enjoy, I hope you enjoy this Movie Review!

This Is The End features a cast of lovable Hollywood favourites who you may recall are in many popular films from the past decade. This concludes my pop-culture knowledge. Most of those aforementioned celebs are known for comedic films involving drugs, seemingly impossible circumstances, and Harry Potter. The cast is suddenly overwhelmed by Judgement Day while attending a party to celebrate being rich and famous. The sky opens up, brings all the good folk to safety, and leaves behind all the hooligans. Spoiler alert? Maybe. Basically the movie is about the end of the world and the struggle the few survivors have to endure. And, just like the This Is The End Movie Review you’re reading now, it’s a lot of fun!

After the majority of the world is either killed or saved, the main characters are left to fight to stay alive. They try to do things like ration food with hilarious consequences. They try to do other things like find water with hilarious consequences. There is even an Oscar-worthy moment of betrayal amongst friends involving a final vote which results in hilarious consequences. So with all of this hilarity, what exactly makes this a horror movie worth a review? The answer is the ongoing dread and doom coupled with the blood, death, violence, and exorcism. See? The system works.

The group of survivors need to venture into the unknown after initially trying to hold up fort in their lavish house. They tried using artwork and a cool, open-concept design for safety but this proves unsuccessful. Not that the artwork was the reason for their issues. Artwork can actually be a good thing. Have you heard of Samantha Gill Art? Subtle. But also good stuff. Anyway so after some internal arguments, the return of a lost friend, and a mild possession the group heads outside. Once outside, the group finds yet another lost friend who they reconnect with under very different circumstances. Being outside is also where they discover the key to surviving Hell on Earth: Being Nice. I might be over-simplifying that part of the plot.

I still jump at the first sign of chaos despite watching This Is The End about 4 or 5 times. It’s pretty cool how the tone of the movie can walk the fine line of horror and comedy. This is sort of what you might see in one of the Things I Fear books available for purchase on Amazon and other fine online retailers. Even more subtle than the first one, I know. Anyway, so sometimes the two sides of the line overlap and it’s a thing of beauty. It’s one of those ‘laugh nervously while pulling the blankets up over your shoulders’ things. Like you get when you watch The Cabin in the Woods and read that review too. Great movie. All in all, I would definitely recommend watching This Is The End for either the laughs or the Fear. Or both. It’s a good one either way.
