Why is it that some movie franchises assume the moderate success of a first film will guarantee a sequel will become an instant classic? Why is it that this logic usually only involves shark-related movies? Jaws was an absolute trend-setter that still holds up today. Jaws 2 was a sad realization the first instalment was made in Hollywood. And sharks aren’t even real. The first 47 Meters Down was a somewhat refreshing take on a classic shark troupe: person has to outlast a shark in its own natural environment. The second 47 Meters Down was a reminder that the first one wasn’t actually that good. So why, Deep Blue Sea, did you have to create a sequel? Was it just so I could write this Deep Blue Sea 2 Movie Review? Thank you for your contribution.

Like most shark-related movies, this one started off with a confusing introduction that really set the tone for how bad the movie was going to be. Fans of terrible horror movies might notice a popular trend in how these movies start. You can gauge how poor the script of the movie is by how much slow-motion is used to watch a woman in a bikini swim in a mostly unrelated scene to the movie within the first 2 minutes of the film. In this case, it wasn’t Piranha DD level bad, but it was enough gratuity to warrant taking out your phone and playing Pokemon Go. I’d share my friend code, but I don’t want you to think I’m pushing my own products for personal gain. Have you checked out the Things I Fear books on Amazon, by the way?

Anyway so back to the movie. A professor of ambiguous science is approached by a lawyer who isn’t really that good at his job. She is offered a lot of money to join him on a mysterious adventure. Naturally, she and a recently married couple join the man on a boat. The place they are going is named “Akheilos”. This is already not a very common word, but the lawyer horribly mispronounces it during his grand introduction. Professor science quickly understands the error, corrects him, explains for the audience why this is barely relevant, and the scene carries on. This proved to be my favourite part in the movie.

The team assembles on the aquatic boathouse thingy and are introduced to the main villain/crazy billionaire. He is the one who concocted this crazy adventure. His plan is to basically capture the most vicious sharks in the world and inject them with an experimental drug to make them smarter than humans to avoid robots taking over the world. I wish I was making up the plot. So to prove the chemical works, they need the help of these 3 volunteer scientists. He is also taking the drug himself but that’s barely relevant. On the surface (pun intended), that seems like a great way to spend a weekend. Not as good as spending a weekend reading Things I Fear posts, mind you. If you thought this Deep Blue Sea 2 Movie Review was good, wait until you keep reading because it’s not even done yet!

I lied about the pronunciation of the Greek name for the place they are staying at being my favourite part. My actual favourite part is when the crazy billionaire basically reveals his evil plan to the camera whilst a shark spies on him from a conveniently placed window. There is no better cinematic moment than watching a CGI-shark eavesdrop on a conversation.

So after the shark rigs an explosion to the basecamp, chaos ensues. The underwater facility starts sinking, the sleeping shark awakens and gives birth, much to the bewilderment of licensed aquatic experts, and people corner themselves in rooms to accelerate their own demise. A lot of arguments take place around this time. I suspect this is to distract you from the fact the movie really doesn’t make much sense. Eventually, the surviving members climb out of a service tunnel, jump in the water, the crazy billionaire is eaten by a shark not known for its breaching abilities, and everyone has a great time. The cliche ending is a perfect way to wrap up the movie.
