As soon as you hear that first raindrop against the window or you feel that first splash of cool water touch your skin, it’s too late. Too late to cover your patio furniture or close the windows in your car. Too late to rush your children back into the house. They are going to be drenched. Thankfully, you can return them and ask for a refund citing poor craftsmanship then start again fresh with a new set. The patio furniture, I mean. I’m not a monster. Oh and this post is about Fear of Rain.

What does Fear of Rain Mean?

Having a Fear of Rain usually includes a Fear of things like tornados, lightning, thunder and wind. This Fear can also include a Fear of it literally raining cats and/or dogs. A lot of people joke about that. Thinking it would be cute to see kittens falling from the sky but no one talks about Great Danes or St Bernard’s striking pedestrians.

Rain is basically just water so it’s wet and a lot of people don’t enjoy suddenly becoming drenched when they aren’t expecting it. For example here’s a little test you can do at home: as your neighbour is leaving for work, pop up from your hiding spot beside their car and spray them with a garden hose. You can tell right away they have must Fear of Rain based on how they react. This is also a great pro tip for anyone who hasn’t gotten enough clicks on their OKCupid profile and are looking to meet someone new. You’re welcome, you romantics.

Take a Rain Check on Fear of Rain

A couple years ago, someone invented a device designed to prevent rain from reaching the target it otherwise had lined up in its scope. The umbrella is used by hundreds of people worldwide as a last resort to ensuring water does not come in direct contact with skin. If you are ever walking down the street and notice everyone has an umbrella but you, you’re probably going to regret leaving the house that day. Rain does not take pity on anyone and often waits for the moment someone is at their most vulnerable to strike. There is no way to predict when rain might inflict a city so there is nothing you can do but hope it’s not today.
